Illums Bolighus grundades 1925 under namnet BO. Bakom etableringen stod den danske affärsmannen Kaj Dessau, som hade sinne för både affärer och estetik. År 1961 ritade arkitekten Kay Kørbing den nuvarande byggnaden, som idag framstår som ett stilrent och klassiskt byggnadsverk precis intill livliga Amagertorv på Ströget.
